Colombo: Religious leaders, civil society activists, and journalists gathered outside the United States Embassy in Colombo on Tuesday to denounce Washington’s actions in Venezuela, following the abduction of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and they were forcibly taken into US custody.

Catholic priests and Protestant pastors stood alongside demonstrators who accused the United States of violating Venezuela’s sovereignty. Protesters displayed banners demanding an end to US involvement in the country, calling for Washington to stop exploiting Venezuelan oil resources, and condemning what they described as aggressive imperial conduct.

Representatives of the Christian Solidarity Movement warned that the operation in Venezuela set a dangerous global precedent. They said the incident amounted to an assault on the sovereignty of independent nations worldwide and urged the United Nations to pursue legal accountability against US President Donald Trump and his administration at the International Criminal Court. The group also appealed to the international community to openly oppose and protest the action.

The advocacy organization Sri Lanka Journalists for Global Justice echoed these concerns, characterizing the US move as a revival of outdated colonial ambitions. According to the group, the intervention represented a form of imperialism that the world had long rejected and overcome.
