Karachi: At least seven people were killed and three others injured after two roadside explosions struck Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, intensifying concerns over persistent militant violence in the region.

According to police officials, the first blast took place in Bannu district when a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a private pickup truck carrying passengers. The explosion caused multiple casualties at the scene and left several others injured.

Authorities said the injured were being shifted to a hospital for emergency treatment when a second explosion occurred nearby, hitting the vehicle transporting victims and rescue efforts. The second blast left more people wounded.

Police launched an investigation into the incident and began efforts to identify those behind the coordinated attack. No group immediately claimed responsibility so far.

Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the families of those killed. As reported by AFP, he said the government remained committed to eliminating terrorism and ensuring those responsible were brought to justice.

The attack comes amid heightened security concerns and continuing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Islamabad has repeatedly accused militant groups of using Afghan territory as a base for cross-border attacks, allegations that the Taliban administration in Kabul has denied.

Relations between the two neighbours have deteriorated in recent months, with border clashes, airstrikes and restrictions on cross-border movement affecting security and trade across the frontier.
