United Nations/Geneva: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s much -hyped address to the UN General Assembly on Friday turned into a public rebuke, as dozens of delegates from across the world staged a dramatic walkout. The sight of diplomats streaming out, some booing as they left, laid bare the widening gulf between Netanyahu and the international community over Israel’s devastating war in Gaza.

Even as shouts of protest echoed through the chamber, the US delegation, Israel’s unwavering backer, stayed put, underscoring Washington’s isolation in defending Netanyahu’s government. The boycott highlighted the global outrage against what human rights groups and legal experts increasingly describe as war crimes and genocide.

Rather than engage with these charges, Netanyahu resorted to ridicule, dismissing claims of genocide in Gaza as a “joke” and rejecting reports of famine and starvation -related deaths. His rhetoric only hardened when he vowed Israel would continue its offensive until Hamas laid down arms. He went further, boasting that Israel was “finishing the job in Gaza as quickly as possible”, a chilling statement that critics say exposes his intent to escalate destruction, not pursue peace.

True to his penchant for theatrics, Netanyahu brandished a map titled “THE CURSE,” scrawling across it with a thick marker to dramatise his view of the regional conflict.

In an extraordinary admission, Netanyahu revealed that Israeli forces had seized control of Palestinian mobile networks and set up loudspeakers along the Gaza border to broadcast his speech directly into the besieged enclave. While he claimed his UN address was heard live across Gaza, international media have found no evidence to support it. The move epitomizes a leader who uses military force not only to bomb and starve a population but to control what they hear.
