Mandalay, Myanmar: The devastating impact of a 7.7 -magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday continues to unfold, with the confirmed death toll surpassing 1,600. The quake, centered near Mandalay, has left countless people buried beneath the rubble, as residents desperately work with their bare hands to rescue survivors. The destruction is widespread, with buildings reduced to ruins, roads buckled, and bridges collapsed. Relief efforts have been severely hindered by the region’s ongoing civil war, as well as damaged infrastructure that has made access difficult.

The search for survivors has been largely undertaken by local volunteers, many using shovels and their hands due to a lack of heavy equipment. Working in extreme heat—41°C (106°F)—rescuers continue to pull victims from the debris. A 5.1-magnitude aftershock on Sunday afternoon caused panic in the streets but did not halt rescue operations.

With thousands injured and many still unaccounted for, hospitals are overwhelmed, struggling to cope with limited medical supplies, food, and clean water.

International assistance is beginning to arrive, but access remains challenging. India has deployed two C-17 military aircraft carrying a field hospital and medical personnel, while a convoy of Chinese cargo trucks carrying emergency supplies is making a difficult 650- kilometer (400-mile) journey to Mandalay. Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand have also sent rescue teams and humanitarian aid, while Britain has pledged $13 million dollars in assistance.

Myanmar’s ongoing civil war is further complicating rescue operations. The military government, which seized power in 2021, has restricted access to certain areas, making it difficult for aid groups to reach those in need. Reports indicate that airstrikes and armed conflict have continued even after the disaster struck. Tom Andrews, a UN human rights monitor, has called for an immediate ceasefire, urging the military to allow unrestricted access for aid workers. “There should be no obstructions to getting aid to those who need it most,” he stated.

As time passes, the window for finding survivors narrows. With many still trapped and thousands displaced, Myanmar faces an immense humanitarian crisis that requires urgent global support.
