Beirut: At least 31 people have been killed and dozens more wounded in a series of Israeli air strikes on Lebanon, the Lebanese Health Ministry said on Monday, marking one of the deadliest episodes in the long‑standing tensions between the two neighbours amid the wider Middle East conflict.
The ministry said its figures are preliminary and could rise as rescue crews continue to recover bodies and treat the injured in hospitals across southern Lebanon and the Beirut suburbs, where several residential and civilian areas were hit by bombardment. Local medical sources reported numerous civilians among the casualties, including women and children.
The Israel Defense Forces said it had carried out targeted operations against positions belonging to Hezbollah and other militant infrastructure in response to rocket and missile launches from Lebanese territory into northern Israel over the past 24 hours. While Israel said its strikes were aimed at destroying capabilities used against its territory, Lebanese officials and residents described widespread destruction and significant impact on civilian neighbourhoods.
Reuters reported that several buildings in towns south of Beirut and near the border were flattened or badly damaged, and ambulances were transporting injured people to overwhelmed hospitals. Al Jazeera reports described scenes of chaos, with families searching through rubble for missing relatives and displaced residents fleeing the violence.
The escalation between Israel and Hezbollah has added another volatile chapter to a regional crisis that began with US‑Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions, raising fears that the conflict could draw in neighbouring countries. International observers have expressed deep concern over the rising civilian toll and the risk of a broader conflagration.
Lebanese political and health authorities have called for an immediate ceasefire and urged global powers to intervene to prevent further loss of life. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway behind the scenes as regional and international actors seek to calm tensions, but the situation remains highly fluid.
