Tokyo: A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 in magnitude struck off the Sanriku coast of Japan on Thursday, March 26, according to seismic monitoring agencies, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The tremor occurred late at night off the northeastern coastline, with its epicentre located in the Pacific Ocean near the Sanriku region. Authorities including the Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake originated at a relatively shallow depth of around 10 kilometres, causing noticeable shaking in parts of northern Japan.

Despite its strength, officials indicated there was no threat of a tsunami, and early assessments suggested limited impact on infrastructure or populated areas. The earthquake registered a moderate intensity level on Japan’s seismic scale, meaning it was widely felt but unlikely to cause major destruction.

Emergency authorities said they were continuing to monitor the situation closely for possible aftershocks. The offshore location of the quake is believed to have reduced the risk of significant damage on land.
