Tehran: The Iranian Red Crescent Society has reported that at least 201 people have been killed in Iran amid a wave of air and missile strikes launched by United States and Israel, according to state media and emergency response data emerging late Sunday. This latest figure reflects the mounting civilian toll as the conflict between Tehran and its adversaries expands across multiple regions.
The Red Crescent’s assessment comes after coordinated strikes hit more than 20 provinces, prompting a nationwide humanitarian response as rescue teams work to reach affected areas and treat the injured. Most casualty reports have stemmed from major attacks on civilian infrastructure, including one on a school in southern Iran that reportedly killed 85 students and teachers. Authorities and emergency workers have urged residents to keep clear of impact sites to allow rescue operations to proceed.
The escalation has unfolded after weeks of rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and stalled diplomatic engagements, culminating in a large-scale military offensive that rattled Tehran and drew swift international reactions. Israeli and US officials described the strikes as pre-emptive measures against perceived security threats, while Iranian authorities condemned the attacks as violations of its sovereignty.
The conflict has generated widespread displacement and fear among civilians, with airspace closures and disruptions to daily life reported across the region. The toll of 201 fatalities — many of them non-combatants — underscores the human cost of the confrontation, even as independent verification of casualty figures remains difficult amid communication blackouts and restricted access in some areas.
Humanitarian groups and foreign governments have called for de-escalation and protection of civilians, warning that further military action risks deepening the crisis. The Red Crescent’s ongoing efforts are focused on search-and-rescue missions, emergency medical support and coordinating aid where possible, amid one of the most volatile phases of the Middle East crisis to date.
