Washington DC/Tehran: Iran has described the recently signed agreement aimed at ending the conflict in West Asia as a sign of American defeat. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran did not enter the agreement because of pressure or threats, but as a result of what he described as the resistance and determination of the Iranian people.
Speaking at a conference in Azerbaijan, Ghalibaf stated that the understanding reached between Iran and the United States should not be viewed as a forced compromise. According to him, the agreement reflects Iran negotiating from a position of strength rather than yielding to external demands.
The agreement emerged after mediation efforts led by Shehbaz Sharif and resulted in the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which established a framework to halt military operations and begin broader negotiations.
Under the interim arrangement, the United States agreed to ease certain restrictions, while Iran committed to maintaining commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz for a limited period as negotiations continue. Both sides are expected to resume technical discussions in the coming weeks, including issues connected to sanctions and nuclear oversight.
At the same time, concerns among Gulf partners have prompted a regional diplomatic effort. Marco Rubio has begun consultations with regional allies to reassure them about maritime security and implementation of the ceasefire framework.
