Washington DC: A 17-year-old of Indian origin is facing two murder charges after his mother and younger brother were discovered dead inside their home in a Massachusetts suburb, authorities said.

Arjun Aravind of Acton has been charged with the murder of his 14-year-old brother Siddharth Aravind and 45-year-old mother Sudha Venkatesan.

Officials allege that Arjun assaulted both his mother and brother inside their home on Tuesday, resulting in their deaths, before fleeing the property. While both victims showed visible signs of trauma, the Chief Medical Examiner has yet to confirm the precise cause and manner of death, and investigators have not yet identified the weapon involved.

According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acton Police Chief Douglas Sturniolo, the deaths occurred Tuesday at the family's residence on Martha Lane in Acton, located about 48 km from Boston. Police said they received a call just after 6.37 pm on August 11 from Arjun's father, who had grown concerned after being unable to reach anyone in his family. A tutor due to visit the home around the same time had similarly been unable to make contact.

Authorities said the father's last contact with his wife had been early that morning before leaving for work, while Siddharth had last been seen around midday. Upon reaching the home, officers found Siddharth's body on the first floor and discovered Sudha in the basement.

Arjun was not at the scene when police arrived and is believed to have escaped in his mother's vehicle. Despite an initial search, investigators were unable to locate him and issued alerts to law enforcement and the public. Early Wednesday, officers in Wayland responding to an unrelated parking lot alarm found the vehicle with Arjun inside, and he was taken into custody.

The Middlesex County District Attorney's Office said investigators uncovered evidence that Arjun had shown signs of troubling conduct in recent times, including turning to the internet and ChatGPT to explore theoretical scenarios or fantasies involving killing members of his family.
