Dhaka: Bangladesh’s interim government has sent an official letter to India seeking the extradition of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, a senior adviser said on Sunday, following her death sentence by a special tribunal.
"The letter was sent the day before yesterday,' Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain told the state-run BSS news agency. The note verbal was sent through the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, an official source said.
On Nov 17, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) sentenced 78-year-old Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in absentia for crimes against humanity. Hasina is currently in India, while Kamal is believed to be hiding there.
Hasina’s Awami League government was toppled during the student-led ‘July Uprising’ last year, which left around 1,400 people dead. India acknowledged receipt of the letter, stating it “noted the verdict” and remains committed to constructive engagement for Bangladesh’s peace, democracy, and stability.
