New York: A 20-year-old woman from California has filed a complaint stating that the design of platforms that create addiction in individuals led to the loss of her mental health. The court in Los Angeles has imposed fines on Meta and YouTube. Meta is required to pay 4.2 million dollar (39 crores), and YouTube must pay 1.8 million dollar (17 crores) as compensation, according to a report by The Washington Post.

The 20-year-old, a California resident, approached the court claiming that her mental health issues were caused by the use of social media from a young age. She stated that social media platforms are designed in such a way that they create addiction, citing features like infinite scrolling and algorithmic recommendations that encourage users to spend more time on them. The complainant pointed out that these features led her to develop depression.

The ruling followed a nine-day-long trial that lasted over 40 hours. The court observed that both Meta and YouTube failed to pay adequate attention to the design and operation of their platforms and that social media companies bear responsibility for the mental health of their users. The court further stated that this case could pave the way for more lawsuits in the future and urged the companies to consider making changes to their platform designs. This ruling comes after a similar decision in which a New Mexico jury imposed a fine of 375 million dollar (approximately 3,500 crores) on Meta for compromising children's safety.
