Thiruvananthapuram: The Cardiology Department of Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, has successfully performed a micro AV leadless pacemaker implantation. With this procedure, the medical college has become the first government institution in the state to offer leadless pacemaker therapy through a transvenous approach.
The patient, a 74-year-old resident of Anchal, underwent the procedure successfully. Health Minister Veena George congratulated the entire team at the medical college for their exemplary service and successful execution of the treatment.
The micro leadless pacemaker is a revolutionary device that is directly implanted into the heart, eliminating the need for traditional pacemaker leads. This innovation significantly reduces the risk of complications while ensuring improved clinical outcomes and enhanced quality of life for patients.
The technology helps maintain normal heart rhythm and corrects irregularities in cardiac pacing. Moreover, the procedure is associated with fewer surgical wounds, faster recovery, and better overall patient well-being.
The procedure was led by Prof. Mathyu Iype, Prof. Sibu Mathyu, and Prof. Krishnakumar B, heads of the Cardiology Department. It was carried out under the guidance of pacemaker surgery expert Dr. Arun Gopi, with support from senior cardiologists Prof. Suresh Madhavan, Prof. Praveen Velappan, Dr. Liyas Muhammad, and nursing officers Rajalakshmi, Susan, and Jancy. Technicians Prajesh, Kishore, and Asimsh also contributed to the successful outcome. The entire procedure was coordinated by Medical College Principal Dr. P.K. Jabbar and Superintendent Dr. Jayachandran.
