Ed Sheeran Calls Gaza Situation "Catastrophic and Unjustifiable" at First Show Since Macklemore Controversy

Ed Sheeran addressed the war in Gaza publicly for the first time on Saturday, opening his solo concert at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field by describing the humanitarian toll on civilians as catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate, while also calling the October 7 attacks on Israel horrific. He said he was devastated by the scale of civilian and child casualties and voiced concern over what he described as systemic injustice unfolding in the West Bank, adding that he was reaching out across different perspectives to determine how he could contribute to helping victims of the conflict.
The remarks came amid backlash over rapper Macklemore's removal from Sheeran's "Loop" tour after he made pro-Palestinian statements, including a rendition of his protest song "Hind's Hall," during Sheeran's early-September shows at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The comments drew criticism from pro-Israel groups, and tour promoter Messina Touring Group subsequently dropped Macklemore from the remaining dates. Four other acts, including Danish band Lukas Graham, Irish singer Aaron Rowe, and Finneas, withdrew from the tour in solidarity in the days that followed.
Sheeran, who had previously said he preferred to keep his shows apolitical and that the decision to remove Macklemore rested with the tour promoter, thanked fans for standing by him and said his concerts remained a space where people with differing views could come together. Meanwhile, critics accused the musician of failing to stand up to the stadium owners – led by billionaire businessman Robert Kraft, who banned Macklemore from performing during the British singer's forthcoming shows.
Roughly 50 pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the venue before the show, with some ticket holders saying they chose to join the protest instead of attending after feeling let down by Sheeran's earlier silence on the issue.
