London: Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated epic The Odyssey has received an enthusiastic response from critics following its world premiere in London, with early reviews praising its scale, performances and cinematic ambition ahead of its worldwide release next week.

Critics who attended the premiere and advance screenings in the London described the three-hour adaptation of Homer's epic poem as one of Nolan's most accomplished works to date, with several suggesting it could emerge as a major contender during the upcoming awards season.

Writing for The Guardian, critic Peter Bradshaw described the film as a sweeping mythological tale that explores the emotional aftermath of war and the loss of innocence. Other reviewers highlighted the film's visual grandeur and its use of IMAX technology, with many calling it one of the director's most ambitious projects.

IndieWire editor-at-large Anne Thompson said the film met her high expectations and predicted it could be a leading contender for the Academy Awards' Best Picture category. She also praised lead actor Matt Damon, suggesting his performance could place him in contention for the Best Actor award.

Several critics characterised the film as "flawless," "breathtaking" and a landmark achievement in Nolan's career. Erik Davis described it as a culmination of the filmmaker's work with IMAX cameras, praising its large-scale action sequences, production design and unexpected horror elements, while saying the film never loses sight of its emotional core.

Davis singled out Robert Pattinson's portrayal of the antagonist Antinous as a standout performance, calling it one of the actor's finest. He also praised performances by Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon and Tom Holland.

Film critic Matt Neglia described the movie as a spectacular achievement in scale, while IndieWire's David Ehrlich said the film felt more emotionally grounded and less bleak than Nolan's Oscar-winning Oppenheimer. Although Ehrlich felt parts of the narrative were uneven, he said the film's concluding act delivered a rewarding payoff.

The Odyssey, filmed entirely with large-format IMAX cameras, is scheduled for worldwide release on July 17 and is already being tipped by early reviewers as one of the year's biggest cinematic events. The film also include a stunning cast including Zendaya, Himesh Patel, Lupita Nyong'O, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron and others.
