Madurai: In a powerful gesture of solidarity, delegates attending the 24th Party Congress of the CPI M donned the keffiyeh — the iconic symbol of Palestinian resistance and unity — expressing their unwavering support for the people of Palestine. The moving display of collective empathy marked one of the most memorable moments of the Congress.
The Party Congress unanimously passed a resolution condemning the ongoing genocide being carried out by Israel and called for immediate international action. The resolution strongly criticised Israel’s continued violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, declaring that the state is proceeding with a brutal and dehumanising occupation, defying all global moral standards and international conventions.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, responding to the developments at the Congress, said that at a time when the people of Palestine are being subjected to unprecedented suffering, the central government’s decision to align with Israel instead of standing with the oppressed is deeply condemnable. He criticised the BJP -led government for abandoning India's long-standing pro-Palestine stance and undermining the country’s legacy of standing for justice and human rights in the global arena.
Reaffirming the CPI M’s position, the Chief Minister said that the resolution passed at the Congress reflects not just a political stand but a moral obligation to stand with the Palestinian people. He reiterated that lasting peace in the region is only possible through the establishment of a free and independent Palestine, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.
CPI M Demands Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza, Condemns Israeli Aggression
Madurai: The 24th Congress of the CPI (M) held in Madurai, passed a resolution condemning Israel’s genocidal attack on Gaza and demanded an immediate and permanent ceasefire. The resolution highlighted the grave humanitarian crisis that has unfolded in the region since Israel resumed its attacks following the brief ceasefire after the October 7, 2023 Hamas strike.
According to the resolution, more than 50,021 Palestinians have been killed and thousands more injured in what it described as a barbaric onslaught. It stated that Israel has deliberately cut off essential supplies such as food, water, fuel and aid to Gaza, with the clear intention of forcing starvation upon its population. The resolution accused Israel of systematically targeting hospitals, aid convoys, UN refugee shelters, schools, mosques and churches, leaving no place safe in Gaza. Sixty percent of the victims, it noted, are women and children. Journalists and UN aid workers too were not spared, and agricultural lands have been destroyed in attacks that the CPI(M) described as evidence of the genocidal character of the Israeli state.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ), taking cognisance of the situation, has issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top leaders of the country. The resolution also drew attention to Israel’s continued encouragement of Zionist settlers to forcibly occupy Palestinian lands in the West Bank and expand illegal Jewish settlements. These actions, according to the CPI(M), are part of a larger design to drive Palestinians out of their homeland and annex the remaining Palestinian territories in pursuit of the Greater Israel agenda.
The resolution strongly criticised the role of the United States and other Western imperialist powers for actively supporting Israel militarily and diplomatically. It referred to former US President Donald Trump’s proposal to turn Gaza into a tourist paradise by removing its Palestinian inhabitants as a plan that aligns with Israel’s interests.
The CPI M resolution condemned the BJP-led central government for diluting India’s long-standing official position on Palestine. Instead of supporting the Palestinian cause, the current government has shown a clear shift towards backing Israel. The resolution pointed out that for the first time in history, India either voted against or abstained from voting on United Nations resolutions demanding a ceasefire and condemning Israeli attacks. This change in stance, it stated, has damaged India’s reputation among developing countries and repositioned the country as an ally of Israel and the United States.
The resolution accused the BJP and the Sangh Parivar of attempting to portray the Israeli aggression in Gaza as a religious war, citing ideological similarities between Zionism and the RSS in their identification of nationalism with religion and shared animosity towards Muslims. It is this ideological closeness, the resolution noted, that underpins the BJP government’s support for Israel.
The 24th Party Congress of the CPI(M) called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and urged the international community to declare Israel an apartheid state and take necessary action. It demanded that the BJP government end its support for Israel and return to India’s principled stand of solidarity with Palestine. The resolution stated that lasting peace in the region can only be achieved through the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the pre-1967 borders. It expressed the CPI(M)’s solidarity with the Palestinian people and called upon the people of India to stand firmly with their just struggle for a free and independent homeland.
