New Delhi: The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected to begin on March 28, two days later than the earlier proposed date of March 26. The final of the tournament is likely to be held on May 31. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to make an official announcement once the dates for the Assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are declared.
Sources indicate that, in view of the elections, the IPL schedule may be released in two phases. The election calendar is expected to primarily affect three franchises — Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Rajasthan Royals (RR).
KKR’s home matches are played at Eden Gardens, while CSK host their games at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. Rajasthan Royals are expected to use Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati as their second home venue.
In previous election years — 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2024 — the IPL schedule was also announced in phases. In 2009, the tournament was held entirely in South Africa due to the general elections, while in 2014, the first phase of the competition took place in the UAE before returning to India.
An official confirmation from the BCCI is awaited.
