New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued a stern directive to the government that politicians who attack doctors must be taken into custody immediately. The court's significant observation came in the wake of an incident in which Shiv Sena workers brutally assaulted a doctor at a health centre in Palghar district, Maharashtra.

Police have registered a case against 17 people in connection with the incident. CCTV footage obtained by police shows the group entering the hospital, pushing the receptionist and threatening a nurse who came to intervene. They then went inside the hospital and assaulted the doctor as well, and the group also barged into the ICU.

The court said politicians who lead such attacks must not be allowed to walk free and the government must take the initiative to ensure they face appropriate punishment and legal action. The Supreme Court said such attacks on doctors are on the rise and the government must intervene urgently to address the situation.
