New Delhi: In a move that brings relief to Indian travelers, Germany has announced that Indian passport holders transiting through German airports to other countries will no longer require a separate transit visa.

The significant decision was announced in a joint statement released during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s first official visit to India. Until now, Indian travelers were required to obtain a special transit visa when changing flights at German airports.

With the new relaxation, passengers traveling via Germany to destinations in Europe, the United States, and other countries will be spared additional visa procedures and financial burdens.

The announcement followed bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Merz, during which the two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas including defence, trade, and education.

Chancellor Merz also stated that the move would help create more employment opportunities in Germany for Indian students and professionals. However, he clarified that the exemption applies only to transit passengers.

Existing visa regulations will continue to apply to those intending to visit or stay in Germany. The decision is expected to benefit millions of Indian travelers who transit through major German airports such as Frankfurt and Munich.
