Gandhinagar: The mortal remains of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani have been officially identified through DNA testing, confirming his death in the tragic Air India plane crash that occurred in Ahmedabad on June 12, a state minister said on Sunday. 32 victims of the plane crash have been identified so far through DNA testing, PTI reported.
Rupani was among the 241 passengers killed when the London- bound Air India Boeing 787-8 (Flight AI171) crashed shortly after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft came down within the premises of the Medical College in Meghaninagar and burst into flames.
Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi told reporters, “The DNA sample of former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani matched with that of his family members today at 11.10 am.”
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel met with Rupani’s family following the confirmation, and Health Minister Rushikesh Patel was also present.
Of the 242 people on board, only one survived. Additionally, 29 individuals on the ground were killed in the crash, including five MBBS students residing in hostels near the accident site.
The disaster has triggered widespread grief and raised urgent questions over aviation safety and emergency response readiness.
