Patna: The Bihar Assembly election has concluded with a record-breaking 67.14 per cent voter turnout — the highest ever in the state’s electoral history. The two-phase polling witnessed enthusiastic participation across all regions, underscoring a strong public desire to influence the state’s political direction. Notably, women voters turned out in greater numbers than men, with an impressive 71 per cent of women exercising their franchise this year.

The second and final phase of polling was held on November 11 across 122 Assembly constituencies in about 20 districts, including Magadh, Mithilanchal, Seemanchal, Shahabad and Tirhut. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), this phase alone registered a turnout of around 68.8 per cent. The first phase, conducted on November 6 in 121 constituencies, saw 65.08 per cent of voters casting their ballots.

In the final phase, 1,302 candidates contested across 45,399 polling stations, 5,326 in urban areas and 40,073 in rural parts of Bihar. More than 2.28 crore voters were aged between 30 and 60 years, while 7.69 lakh were first-time voters in the 18–19 age bracket. Women continued to show strong participation, numbering 1.75 crore among the electorate in this phase.

Bypolls were held simultaneously in other states, including Budgam and Nagrota in Jammu and Kashmir, Anta in Rajasthan, Ghatshila in Jharkhand, Jubilee Hills in Telangana, Tarn Taran in Punjab, Dampa in Mizoram, and Nuapada in Odisha.

This election is seen as a critical test for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is facing public scrutiny over unemployment and rising living costs. In the last Assembly election, the NDA had struggled in the Magadh and Shahabad regions, winning only eight of the 48 seats there.

The counting of votes will take place on November 14, when the results will determine whether the NDA retains power or the opposition alliance led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) manages to secure a comeback.
