Escalator Malfunction at Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station Injures Two

Thiruvananthapuram: A sudden escalator malfunction at Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station left two passengers injured, triggering safety concerns at one of the state’s busiest transit hubs.

The incident occurred on the escalator connecting Platform 5 to the upper level. According to eyewitnesses, the escalator abruptly stopped while passengers were ascending and then began moving downward with a loud noise, causing panic among those on it.

Amid the confusion, several passengers lost their balance and fell. Two women—identified as Dhanya and Ambili, who had arrived on the Vanchinad Express from Ernakulam—sustained serious injuries. They were initially given first aid at the railway aid post before being shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital for further treatment. Both reportedly suffered injuries to their arms and legs. Unconfirmed reports suggest that a few other passengers may have also been hurt in the fall.

Passengers alleged that the escalator had shown signs of malfunction in recent days as well. Following the incident, railway authorities have shut down the escalator.

Those injured have indicated that they plan to file a formal complaint. The station, which handles thousands of passengers daily, has now come under scrutiny over maintenance and passenger safety measures.
