Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mohanan Kunnumel’s statement that many student organisation leaders are drug addicts has sparked controversy. The VC challenged these leaders to undergo drug tests and accused those who create trouble on campus of being thugs.

He said that the strength of a nation does not lie in those who block teachers, burn tires on roads, or throw stones at buses. He added that some student leaders behave like goons, and such “rowdies” are not role models for society. The Vice-Chancellor further stated that if a drug test is conducted, it will be clear how many of them are addicts.

Student organisations have come out against the VC’s statement, claiming that he made the remark with political motives and that it insults the entire student community. They also argued that the VC is trying to portray democratic protests on campuses as criminal activities.

There is a strong demand for the VC to apologise for the incident, along with criticism suggesting that his goal is to build a society that lacks self-respect and public consciousness.
