Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday accused the Congress- led UDF and Kerala’s opposition of siding with the Union government in undermining the state’s development. He alleged that opposition leaders and UDF MPs were unwilling even to submit requests for Kerala’s rightful share of central funds, prioritising political gains over the welfare of the people.

Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted that 18 Lok Sabha MPs from Kerala had failed to raise the state’s concerns in Parliament, effectively aiding measures aimed at reducing financial assistance to the state. "In times of crisis, the UDF seeks to side with the central ruling party against Kerala’s public interest,' he said.

Speaking on the Centre’s policies, the Chief Minister strongly criticised the imposition of a 40% tax on the Kerala State Lottery, calling it “unjust” and highlighting that the lottery is a vital livelihood source for thousands of marginalised and differently-abled citizens. He questioned the Union government’s rationale for treating one of the country’s most transparent lotteries as an illegal commodity.

Despite these financial pressures, He said the Kerala government remained committed to public welfare. Salaries and pensions are being paid on time, the LIFE Mission has provided homes to 471,000 people, moving towards the 500,000 target, and welfare pensions have been increased from 600 rupees to 2,000 rupees, benefiting 6 million citizens.

The Chief Minister accused the Centre of obstructing development by withholding funds, affecting hospitals, schools, and infrastructure projects. He demanded that the Union government immediately restore Kerala’s IGST share, return reduced loan limits, and correct errors in GSDP calculations to ensure the state receives its due entitlement.

Pinarayi Vijayan appealed to the people of Kerala to recognise forces attempting to undermine the state and assured that the government would continue implementing welfare schemes regardless of obstacles. “If we stand united, no force can hinder Kerala’s progress,” he said, reaffirming the state’s commitment to building a Kerala with living standards comparable to developed countries.
