Thiruvananthapuram: The Motor Vehicles Department has reminded that the schools and colleges going on tours with children must inform the concerned RTO about the trip. The information must be given at least one week prior to the trip. It has been informed that this is to make sure that the Motor Vehicles Department officials can inspect the buses, ensure safety, and brief both students and drivers about necessary precautions.

In previous years, inspections found that many buses used for student tours lacked emergency exits and fire safety equipment. Drivers and students were also unaware of how to respond during emergencies. Several buses had unauthorised speakers and decorative lights installed. Such modifications can lead to fire hazards and distract other drivers, increasing the risk of accidents.

The Motor Vehicles Department clarified that in the event of an accident caused by such violations, the responsibility will rest with the respective educational institution organizing the trip.
