CPI(M) State Secretary M V Govindan Says Left Won in Brazil Despite Attempts to Undermine Election

Thiruvananthapuram: CPI(M) Keralam state secretary M V Govindan said the Left had won in Brazil after resisting and defeating attempts to subvert the election. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had won the hearts of the people by overcoming what he described as imperialist attempts to destroy democracy.
Lula, who lost his little finger while working as a metalworker at the age of 14, became Brazil’s first leftist president following the fall of the military dictatorship. Brazil has turned left again, strengthening the wave of left-wing politics in Latin America, M V Govindan said. Lula’s election as president marked a popular verdict against right-wing politics across the region, he added.
Lula secured a decisive victory in the runoff election by defeating far-right leader Flavio Bolsonaro. The 80-year-old is set to become Brazil’s president for a fourth time.
M V Govindan said Lula had made a political comeback after overcoming attempts to eliminate him from the political scene.
