Kollam: Kerala Minister J Chinchurani on Wednesday praised Milma for its crucial role in strengthening the state’s dairy sector as she inaugurated the state-level National Milk Day celebrations.

Speaking at the event, the Minister highlighted Milma’s contribution to Kerala’s dairy growth over the past 45 years. She said the cooperative has ensured a stable livelihood for dairy farmers by sharply increasing milk production and procurement. “By providing additional incentives, cattle subsidies, and other welfare schemes, Milma has always prioritised the welfare of dairy farmers,” she said. In the previous financial year, Milma returned 92.5 per cent of its profits to farmers through these welfare programmes and incentives.

Milma has grown into a major cooperative organisation with an annual turnover of 4,327 crore rupees. It procures around 1.25 million litres of milk per day and sells approximately 1.65 million litres daily. The Minister also highlighted that Milma recorded a 14 per cent increase in milk procurement from April to September this year, describing it as a “historic achievement.”

The event also paid tribute to Dr Verghese Kurien, the father of India’s White Revolution. State Planning Board Vice Chairperson Prof V K Ramachandran, delivering the Dr Verghese Kurien Memorial Lecture, emphasised Kurien’s focus on cooperative credit systems, professional management, and advanced technology, which enabled even farmers without capital or land to participate in the dairy sector.

Milma Chairman K S Mani added that Kerala has the potential to achieve self-sufficiency in milk production, crediting Kurien’s visionary leadership for India’s dairy sector growth.
