Kozhikode: A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after a metal spike on a gate pierced through his neck in Malappuram on Sunday afternoon. The victim, Mohammed Maasi, son of Mohammed Zaheer of Siyamkandam Palasseri Parambu on the Airport Road in Pulikkal, was admitted to the Medical College Hospital with the spike still embedded in his neck.

Maasi had climbed onto the roof of his house to reach mangoes from an overhanging tree when he slipped and fell onto the gate below. The spear-like iron rod fixed atop the gate drove through his neck and came out the other side, leaving him suspended and impaled on the gate.

Passersby who noticed the boy hanging from the gate held him in place to prevent further injury. An ambulance was called, and rescuers used a stretcher to support him while cutting away half of the gate to free him from the structure. He was then transported to the Medical College Hospital. Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and used a grinder to cut off the protruding portions of the rod still embedded in his neck. Surgery has since commenced to remove the remaining section of the spike
