Thiruvananthapuram: Imagine standing at a bus stop in an unfamiliar town and being able to check, in real-time, how far the next bus is, how many seats are available, and how long it will take to walk to the stop. Now imagine booking your seat instantly through your phone—without cash, without confusion.
This isn’t a futuristic vision or a pilot in a metro city. It’s the new reality of bus travel in Kerala, where the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to launch a full-scale digital transformation, making one of the country’s oldest public transport systems one of its smartest.
Starting next month, KSRTC’s newly revamped mobile app will bring unprecedented convenience and transparency to commuters across the state. The app will allow passengers to track over 1,000 buses in real-time, view estimated arrival times, check seat availability, and receive step-by-step directions to the nearest stop—all from the palm of their hand.
If a seat is available, passengers can book it instantly via the app using UPI, debit cards, or prepaid KSRTC travel cards—ushering in a truly cashless travel experience. Users will also receive real-time updates on upcoming buses for any selected route, making last-minute planning easy and efficient
From Paper to Digital: Depot Modernization
KSRTC’s digital push isn’t limited to passengers. Internally, it is set to implement a full-fledged e-filing system across its 93 depots, making administrative processes completely paperless. This ambitious step was made possible through MLA funds, which supported the setup of required IT infrastructure.
Smart Cards for Students and Frequent Travellers
One of the most impactful reforms for young commuters is the introduction of smart student concession cards. Linked to the KSRTC app, these cards can be renewed digitally and are valid until the end of the academic course. Students only need to recharge the card for the required duration.
Additionally, a rechargeable prepaid travel card will be introduced, enabling users to load money and travel seamlessly across routes without handling cash or standing in queues for tickets. The card will also be presented to passengers along with tickets and can be used for other transactions within the KSRTC ecosystem.
Enhanced Security and Passenger Information Systems
The modernization plan also includes a strong focus on safety and communication. CCTV cameras will be installed in all buses—covering the front, rear, interior, and exterior—as well as in major bus terminals and stations. This will enhance both commuter safety and operational monitoring.
To ensure that no passenger misses a bus, digital display boards are being installed at major bus stops and terminals, providing real-time information about bus arrivals, routes, and seat availability.
