Yellow Alert in Eight Districts as Low Pressure Triggers Heavy Rain

Thiruvananthapuram: With a low-pressure system forming in the northwest Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall in Keralam today and tomorrow. A yellow alert has been declared today in eight districts — Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kannur and Kasaragod — with isolated spells of heavy rain forecast in these areas. Three districts have been placed under a yellow alert for tomorrow as well. Fishing has been banned along the Keralam and Lakshadweep coasts, with the monsoon picking up again after a brief lull.

The National Institute of Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of rough sea conditions along the Keralam coast today, with wave heights of 0.9 to 1.3 metres expected to cause coastal inundation until 11.30 pm on Monday. Along the Kanyakumari coast, waves of 1.2 to 1.4 metres are forecast from tonight until 8.30 am on August 25, 2026. Fishermen and coastal residents have been urged to remain on high alert.

Safety Guidelines

Residents of vulnerable coastal areas should relocate as directed by authorities. Small boats and vessels should not be taken into the sea during this period. Bringing vessels ashore when waves are intensifying is as dangerous as launching them — both must be avoided. All beach-based activities, including tourism, must be completely suspended until INCOIS withdraws its warning. Fishing vessels should be securely moored at harbour, maintaining safe distances between craft. All visits to beaches and sea-based recreational activities are strictly to be avoided. Residents should also be alert to the risk of coastal erosion during this period.
