Three Corporations to Be Led by Women in Kerala Local Body Elections; Reservation Details Announced

Thiruvananthapuram: In the upcoming local body elections, the posts of Mayor in Kochi, Thrissur, and Kannur Corporations have been reserved for women, according to the notification issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) on Wednesday. In the previous term, these Corporations were under the general category.
The SEC has also finalized the reservation of president and chairperson posts across district panchayats, municipalities, block panchayats, and grama panchayats for the new term.
Among the eight district panchayats, seven have been reserved for women — Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. The post of president in Ernakulam district panchayat has been reserved for a Scheduled Caste (SC) candidate.
In the case of municipalities, 44 of the 87 chairperson posts have been reserved for women, six for SC candidates, and one for a Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidate.
Out of 152 block panchayats, 67 will have women presidents, while eight posts are reserved for SC women, seven for SC candidates, two for ST women, and one for an ST candidate.
Similarly, among 941 grama panchayats across the state, 417 president posts have been reserved for women. Within this, 46 are for SC women, 46 for SC candidates, eight for ST women, and eight for ST candidates.
