Heavy Rain Lashes Kerala, Fisherman Dies; Orange Alert in Three Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rain and strong winds lashed several parts of Kerala on Monday, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disruptions in coastal regions.
In Alappuzha district, a fisherman lost his life after his boat capsized near the Arthunkal coast amid rough weather conditions. The deceased, identified as Paul Devasia, was a resident of Arthunkal. Police said he had ventured out for fishing early in the morning. Although other fishermen managed to rescue him from the water, he later succumbed to his injuries.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Kozhikode, Kasaragod, and Kannur districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging between 115.6 mm and 204 mm within 24 hours. A yellow alert has also been declared for Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, and Alappuzha, where rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is likely.
Authorities reported continuous heavy rain in northern Kerala since early morning, resulting in waterlogging in several parts of Kozhikode city. Shops near the KSRTC bus station were among those affected as rainwater entered the premises. Intense rainfall was also recorded in the high-range areas of Malappuram and Kannur, while strong winds battered coastal belts across the state.
Rain intensified in central Kerala districts, including Ernakulam and Alappuzha, during the morning hours. The IMD has also warned of strong winds over all districts and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea due to rough weather conditions and turbulent waves.
