Pinarayi Vijayan Visits Landslide-Hit Stretch of NH 66 at Elayavoor South

Kannur: Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan visited the area along National Highway 66 at Elayavoor South where a landslide occurred following heavy rain. A portion of the soil above the retaining wall constructed as part of the highway project collapsed on the previous day. Pinarayi Vijayan assessed the situation in the area.
The landslide occurred close to residential houses. The retaining wall at the site had collapsed earlier as well. Cracks that have developed in the retaining wall and a nearly 100-metre-long crack along the proposed service road have raised concerns among local residents. The gabion wall constructed between the concrete retaining wall and the proposed service road has also subsided.
The highway passes around 16 feet below the surrounding ground level at this location as the hill was cut down for its construction. Although land has been acquired for the service road, construction has not yet begun. Around 20 houses and establishments are located on both sides of the road.
Residents are concerned that the continued occurrence of landslides could pose a threat to the safety of their homes.
