Alappuzha: Health authorities have been unable to determine the source of the Shigella outbreak in Aarattupuzha, with investigations failing to establish whether the disease spread through contaminated water or food. While coliform bacteria were detected in water supplied by the Kerala Water Authority, it remains unclear whether this was the direct cause of the Shigella infections.

Nearly a hundred people have so far sought treatment for symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting, and all are under medical observation. Stool samples were sent from 15 patients, of which results for four have been received — all confirming Shigella infection. Results for the remaining 11 are awaited. Since all patients present identical symptoms, they are being treated for Shigella regardless of individual test outcomes.

In response to the outbreak, the District Collectorate has ordered all schools and anganwadis in Aarattupuzha panchayat to remain closed for 15 days from June 1. The decision was taken on the recommendation of the Muthukkulam Block Panchayat President and the District Medical Officer.
