Thiruvananthapuram: A total of 33,711 polling stations will be established across the state for the Kerala local body elections, which will be conducted in two phases. Among these, 28,127 stations will function in the three-tier panchayat system, 3,569 in municipalities, and 2,015 in corporations. The State Election Commissioner has issued comprehensive guidelines to ensure efficient conduct of the polls.

All activities within and around polling stations must strictly adhere to the green protocol. Waste must be segregated and disposed of in accordance with eco-friendly standards, with local body secretaries responsible for overseeing compliance. Each polling station must ensure essential facilities including electricity, drinking water, furniture, and toilets. Adequate arrangements should be made outside for voters waiting in queues. Senior citizens and persons with disabilities must be given priority assistance. If a polling building lacks a ramp, a temporary ramp must be installed. Visually impaired persons, individuals with disabilities, elderly voters, and patients should be permitted to cast their votes without standing in line.

Lighting and fans at polling stations must be made operational by the day preceding the vote. The feasibility of providing meals to polling personnel through Kudumbashree networks should also be examined. Roads leading to remote polling stations must be cleared, and the premises should be kept clean, with all necessary preparations completed at least two days prior to polling.

Support for Visually Challenged and Disabled Voters

The State Election Commission has issued special directives to assist voters with visual impairment or physical disabilities. If the Presiding Officer determines that a voter cannot vote independently, assistance may be provided by a helper aged above 18. In such cases, an ink mark will be applied to the left index finger of the voter and the right index finger of the helper. The same helper may not assist any other voter. Individuals with physical disabilities must be allowed direct access to vote without waiting in queue.
