Typhoon Dolphin Makes Landfall in China; Over 10 lakh People Evacuated

Shanghai: More than ten lakh people have been evacuated from cities including Shanghai after Typhoon Dolphin battered eastern China with winds reaching speeds of 150 kmph.

The typhoon made landfall near Yuhuan in Zhejiang province on Sunday evening, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the region. The storm severely disrupted transportation, with more than 1,400 flights cancelled in Shanghai alone.

Local authorities advised residents to remain indoors as the cyclone moved across the region. Major tourist attractions, including Shanghai Disneyland and Legoland, were also shut as a precautionary measure.

Although a red alert had been issued for the region, the typhoon weakened into a tropical storm by Monday morning. However, weather authorities warned that heavy rain could continue through Wednesday, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides in several areas.

A nine-year-old boy was reported missing at sea in Wenling amid the storm.

Authorities have also taken action against the spread of misinformation linked to the typhoon. Two people were arrested for allegedly creating and circulating fake videos and images generated using artificial intelligence on social media.

The storm had also caused significant damage in parts of the Philippines, Taiwan and Okinawa in Japan before affecting eastern China. Authorities in the affected regions continue to monitor the situation as heavy rainfall and flooding remain a concern.
