Toledo: At least 12 people were injured after gunfire erupted near a popular community festival in Toledo, Ohio, prompting a large police response and an ongoing search for those responsible.

Authorities said the shooting occurred close to the annual Old West End Festival, a well-known event that draws crowds with live entertainment, food vendors, shopping and tours of historic homes. According to police, two of the victims remain in critical condition, while the others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan said preliminary findings suggest that more than one person may have been involved in the exchange of gunfire. Investigators believe at least two individuals were shooting, possibly at each other, when the violence broke out.

The sudden outbreak of gunfire triggered panic among festivalgoers, with many rushing for safety. Videos circulating on social media showed people fleeing the area as shots rang out, while emergency responders attended to the wounded.

According to report by AP, witness Kevin Berry said he was enjoying a live music performance in a nearby arboretum when he heard several gunshots. As people around him dropped to the ground or ran for cover, Berry noticed what appeared to be a firearm discarded nearby. Police officers who had already been deployed at the festival quickly moved into action.

It was reported that Berry, who has military and medical experience, assisted in checking on injured individuals and several people suffering from gunshot wounds scattered around the area.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing that community events and summer festivals should remain safe environments for families and residents.

Police have not announced any arrests and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
