German Chancellor Raises Alarm Over West Asia Conflict; Questions US Strategy, Praises Iran's Resilience

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz
Berlin: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict in West Asia, warning that the situation is becoming increasingly complex and unpredictable. His remarks come amid rising tensions affecting critical global shipping routes.
Merz openly questioned the United States’ war strategy, stating that he finds it unclear what kind of exit plan Washington is pursuing in the ongoing conflict. He cautioned that earlier assumptions about Iran may have underestimated its strength and strategic capability.
According to the German leader, Iran has demonstrated greater resilience and tactical skill than many had anticipated. Despite the intensity of the conflict, he noted that Iranian leadership appears to be handling negotiations with considerable effectiveness. At the same time, Merz also issued sharp criticism of Iran’s leadership over its role in the crisis.
He further highlighted the growing risks around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most crucial oil shipping routes. Any disruption in this narrow passage, he warned, could have far-reaching economic consequences globally, particularly for energy markets.
Merz also raised concerns about reports of mines in the region, suggesting that such developments could severely impact global energy supply chains and international trade.
