Washington, DC: Venezuela’s far-right opposition figure María Corina Machado has handed over her Nobel Prize to US President Donald Trump, following a meeting at the White House. The meeting took place after the United States forcibly detained Venezuela’s elected president, Nicolás Maduro, in an act widely condemned as a violation of the country’s sovereignty.
Machado claimed she was dedicating the medal to Trump 'in recognition of his unparalleled commitment to our freedom,' a statement that echoed long-standing criticism of her close alignment with US interventionist policies. She made the remarks while addressing journalists after her meeting with Trump. Trump, in turn, praised the encounter, calling it a “great honor,” and once again framed himself as deserving of the Nobel Prize.
Trump had previously asserted that Machado intended to share her Nobel Prize with him. Speaking to Fox News, he said such a gesture would validate his record and described Norway’s failure to award him the prize as an embarrassment, remarks consistent with his repeated public grievances over international recognition.
The decision to award the Nobel Prize to Machado, a figure known for her staunchly pro-American and pro-Israel positions, generated significant controversy. Critics point to her central role in orchestrating the 2014 protests in Venezuela, which were widely viewed as attempts to destabilize and overthrow the elected government. Now 58, Machado was disqualified by Venezuela’s Supreme Court from running in the 2024 presidential election, citing constitutional and legal violations.
As Nicolás Maduro, who won the election, addressed a massive victory rally attended by hundreds of thousands of supporters, several US media outlets chose instead to broadcast Machado’s speech live, underscoring what critics describe as a persistent media bias in favor of regime-change narratives over electoral outcomes.
