Islamabad: Rumours over the condition of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan intensified on Tuesday after his sisters were allegedly assaulted outside Adiala Jail while attempting to meet him. The three sisters, Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khan and Dr Uzma Khan, said they were denied entry and then manhandled by police despite holding a peaceful protest seeking clarity on Khan’s health.

Noreen, 71, claimed officers pulled her by the hair and dragged her along the road after streetlights around the jail were abruptly switched off. The family said other women in the group were also slapped and shoved. They accused the authorities of blocking all communication with Khan and enforcing an undeclared ban on family visits for more than a month.

The incident fuelled a wave of unverified social-media posts claiming that the jailed former premier had died in custody. Supporters gathered near the prison demanding an official statement and transparency over his condition.

Khan, in custody since August 2023, is serving multiple sentences linked to corruption and state-secrets charges. Jail authorities have not issued any confirmation or comment on the circulating rumours. The sisters have called for an impartial inquiry into the alleged police assault and renewed their request for immediate access to him.
