London: A major disaster struck Britain after two trains collided due to a failure in railway safety systems, killing one loco pilot and injuring more than 60 people. Eleven of the injured remain in critical condition. The tragic accident occurred in Bedford, around 90 km from London, and rescue operations are continuing at the site.
The collision took place at around 5.15 pm local time yesterday, when one train rammed into the rear of another near Bedford. The loco pilot of the first train had stopped to check the train following a sudden snag in the signalling system, when the train coming up behind it lost control and crashed into it moments later.
International media reported that the loco pilot who had halted the train to inspect it was the one who died in the crash. There is strong criticism that the disaster, which claimed a worker's life, stemmed from serious lapses by the authorities in railway modernisation and safety arrangements.
