Crans-Montana: The death toll from the explosion and subsequent fire at a resort in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, during New Year celebrations has risen to 40, with around 100 people injured, many seriously. The incident occurred at the Le Constellation Bar at the Swiss Sky Resort, a popular destination in the Swiss Alps.

The explosion took place at around 1:30 AM local time, when more than 150 people were inside the bar. The blast triggered a violent fire that spread rapidly through the basement of the bar. While Swiss authorities have confirmed the incident was not a terrorist attack, the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Frederic Gisler, the commander of the Valais Cantonal Police, expressed deep shock, saying, “We are devastated.” The magnitude of the incident overwhelmed local healthcare facilities, with intensive care units and operating theatres quickly reaching full capacity. Mathias Renard, the regional councillor, added that the injuries sustained were severe, with around 100 people receiving treatment, including several victims from different countries. Many of the injured have sustained serious burns.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with 10 helicopters, 40 ambulances, and 150 volunteers deployed to assist the victims. Due to the overwhelming number of injured, authorities have urged local residents to exercise caution in the coming days to avoid additional emergencies that could strain already overburdened medical resources.

The town of Crans-Montana, a skiing hotspot located about 130 kilometers south of Zurich and 40 kilometers from the iconic Matterhorn peak, has a population of 10,000. Known for its breathtaking alpine scenery, Crans-Montana has recently shifted focus to high-tech research and development, moving away from its traditional tourist culture. The municipality was formed only nine years ago, following the merger of several towns on January 1, 2017.

In addition to the explosion, local authorities are facing an escalating challenge due to severe drought conditions that have led to wildfires spreading across different parts of the country.
