Thiruvananthapuram: Turkish filmmaker Erkan Yazici’s visually arresting survival drama Fragments From The East captivated audiences on the opening day of the 30th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK).

The film, screened under the World Cinema section at Sree Theatre, was shot at an altitude of 2,700 metres in Turkey amid harsh winter conditions and wolf-infested terrain. The 131-minute feature is drawing praise for its breathtaking imagery and unflinching portrayal of human endurance.

Starring Guldestan Yuce and Turgay Atalay, Fragments From The East follows the journey of a woman escaping war and a fugitive Russian general as they navigate treacherous, snow-laden mountains. The narrative explores survival at its rawest, set against a backdrop that mirrors the characters’ internal struggles.

Viewers were particularly struck by the film’s cinematography, which relies heavily on real locations to heighten realism. The stark landscapes and immersive visuals blur the line between fiction and reality, making the experience feel almost visceral for the audience.

Festival attendees praised the film for its ability to convey the fragility of life and the resilience of the human spirit through powerful, atmospheric filmmaking.
