Madurai: The 24th Congress of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), currently underway, has passed a strong political resolution reaffirming the party’s unwavering solidarity with socialist Cuba amid intensifying US-imposed economic hardships.
The CPI(M) hailed Cuba as a symbol of hope and resistance, emphasizing that the island nation continues to inspire global movements confronting imperialism and working towards a better world. The resolution highlighted that the United States, historically treating Latin America as its backyard, has consistently sought to suppress any assertion of sovereignty in the region—especially targeting Cuba since it embraced socialism following its 1959 revolution.
According to the party, the economic blockade imposed by the US since 1962 is nothing short of “genocidal,” aimed at economically suffocating the country and ensuring its collapse. The blockade, it noted, has caused staggering losses estimated at Rs 1,29,69,717.04 crore to the Cuban people, severely hampering their productive and economic capabilities.
Yet, the resolution celebrated Cuba’s achievements despite the adversities. It underscored that the Cuban government continues to ensure free education, free healthcare, and significant development in sports, arts, and culture. Moreover, Cuba has maintained its tradition of internationalism, sending doctors and nurses to disaster-hit and pandemic-affected regions across the globe, even when facing internal hardships.
The Congress strongly condemned the continued US defiance of international consensus, noting that nearly 31 resolutions passed by the UN General Assembly demanding an end to the blockade have been ignored by Washington. Instead, the US has escalated its pressure, reportedly funding terrorist and anti-Cuban activities, and placing Cuba on the contentious list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, seen by CPI(M) as part of a broader coercive strategy to stifle nations resisting American hegemony.
The resolution drew attention to Cuba’s current economic crisis, citing power outages, shortages of food, fuel, and raw materials, and disruption in the production of medicines as a direct outcome of the blockade. Nonetheless, it praised the Cuban people for their “heroic resistance” and continued defence of their sovereignty.
Calling for international support, the CPI(M) urged global citizens to stand with Cuba and resist the ongoing imperialist aggression. As a concrete step, the Congress resolved to mobilize financial support for Cuba through a campaign initiated by the National Committee for Solidarity with Cuba, culminating before August 13, 2025, which marks the birth centenary of Comrade Fidel Castro.
All CPI(M) members and associated class and mass organisations have been asked to contribute financially, suggesting a range from Rs 10 to a day’s wage or more, to help procure essential medicines and electricity generators for Cuba.
“This is part of our anti-imperialist task,” the resolution concluded, stressing that solidarity with Cuba is a stand in defence of socialism and a fight against global imperialism.
