Madurai: The 24th Congress of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has become a rallying point for communist and workers' parties worldwide, with over 30 fraternal organisations sending messages of solidarity to the gathering in Tamil Nadu's Sitaram Yechury Nagar. The event, running from April 2–6, has highlighted both the CPI(M)'s enduring influence in Indian politics and its significance in the international communist movement.
From Beijing to Caracas, communist parties have praised the CPI(M)'s century-long commitment to workers' rights, secular values, and socialist ideals. The Communist Party of China emphasised the importance of stronger China–India relations in its message, while Vietnam's communists commended the Indian party's defence of democracy and minority rights. European comrades, including the French and Portuguese Communist Parties, drew attention to the global rise of right-wing forces, explicitly linking India's BJP government to this dangerous trend.
The Congress has also served as a platform to condemn imperialist aggression worldwide. Messages from Palestine to South Africa denounced the ongoing violence in Gaza, with the South African Communist Party drawing parallels between the struggles of oppressed peoples everywhere. Bangladesh's communist parties issued particularly stark warnings about the spread of religious extremism in the region, directly criticising the BJP's policies for undermining India's secular foundations.
Several international messages highlighted Kerala's Left-led government as a model of progressive governance, with the South African Communist Party noting how the CPI(M)'s work in mass movements and electoral politics inspires comrades globally. The Communist Party of Vietnam stressed the need to strengthen the relationship between Kerala and Vietnam. The German Communist Party said that the government in the state of Kerala, in which their party was a major participant, was showing alternatives in the fight against poverty and in improvements in health and education. The Communist Party of Ireland appreciated the LDF government in Kerala for demonstrating an alternative trajectory of inclusive development. Many tributes poured in for late CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, remembering his contributions to both Indian and international communism.
As delegates work through the Congress agenda – which includes adopting a new political resolution and electing fresh leadership – the overwhelming international support underscores the CPI(M)'s continued relevance. From the Communist Party of Venezuela's call to resist neoliberalism to the Communist Party of USA's warning about the dangerous alliance between Trump's MAGA movement and Modi's BJP, the messages collectively paint a picture of a global left movement seeking unity against rising authoritarianism.
The 24th Congress stands not just as a national event, but as a moment of international communist solidarity, with the CPI(M) positioned as a crucial link between India's working class and progressive forces worldwide.
