Huge Rock Breaks Off From Hillside, Falling Close To Dam Gate In Idukki

Idukki : In a significant rockfall, a huge boulder broke off the hillside, landing  close to arch dam in Idukki. The incident took place at 5 early Thursday morning.

The rock broke loose from Kurathimala and crashed to pieces up on landing at a patch close to the dam gate The dam’s safety officials suspect soil erosion beneath from heavy rains for the breakoff.

In a prior incident, a rock collapsed similarly from Kurathimala damaging portion of security staff quarters located at the dam’s basement. The foothills of Kurathimala is populated while the dam top bustles with tourists and vehicle traffic. Nevertheless, boulders remain a potential threat to all.

The Thursday fall landed close to ticket counter for visitors to the dam. However, the dawn timing with no people or vehicles around averted what would else have been a major tragedy.
