New Delhi: The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) Central Committee has condemned the brutal murder of a 19- year- old playschool teacher in Haryana’s Bhiwani and demanded an immediate arrest of those behind the crime.
The victim, who had gone to a nursing college on August 11 to enquire about a course, did not return home. Her body was later found near a canal in Singhani village with her throat slit, sparking widespread outrage in the state.
SFI alleged that the Haryana Police initially refused to file a missing complaint and instead resorted to victim blaming, telling the victim’s father that she might have “run away” and “would return in two days.”
“The incident raises serious questions about the safety of women under BJP rule in Haryana,” the organisation said in a statement. It accused the state government of failing to protect women and called the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” slogan hollow.
In the statement was released by SFI general secretary Srijan Bhattacharyya and president Adarsh M Saji, SFI also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising the RSS in his Independence Day address while allegedly avoiding concerns of violence against women and marginalised communities.
The student body has called for statewide protests and demanded accountability from Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini for what it termed a failure to act on time and prevent the crime.
