Tampa: England's pre-World Cup training camp in Tampa, Florida has been disrupted by persistent heavy rain and overcast conditions, compounding concerns over the state of the pitch prepared for Saturday's friendly match against New Zealand. Coach Thomas Tuchel, however, has remained resolute, insisting the setbacks have not derailed the team's preparations.

England chose Tampa to acclimatise to the intense heat and humidity expected at their Group L opener against Croatia in Dallas on June 17. Instead, they were greeted by unusually heavy rainfall throughout their stay. "Life proves that no matter what you plan, it goes its own way," Tuchel told reporters on Friday, adding that Friday was the first day of full sunshine and that the team had adapted to the conditions and would recover lost time in the weeks ahead.

Images of the match venue pitch have also caused alarm, with the surface appearing patchwork — sections of grass of different shades stitched together in a way that increases the risk of player injury. Tuchel said the reports were "a little worrying" but that he would reserve final judgement until the team stepped onto the pitch.

England plan to use the New Zealand friendly match to give playing time to as many squad members as possible, with Tuchel intending to field two entirely different XIs for 45 minutes each. A second warm-up match against Costa Rica follows on Tuesday before the squad relocates to their official base camp in Kansas City ahead of the tournament.
