Hanoi: A speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized near Phu Quoc on Saturday morning, triggering a major rescue operation by Vietnamese authorities.


Authorities have confirmed fatalities in the accident, though rescue operations are still underway and the toll could change as search efforts continue. The boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it capsized near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, off the coast of Phu Quoc.


Visuals circulating on social media show the overturned speedboat floating upside down in the sea, with rescue personnel arriving at the scene in speedboats to search for survivors.


According to local media reports, the vessel sank at around 10.30 am near the Hon May Rut Ngoai route. Rescue teams had pulled several passengers from the water as search operations continued.


The Embassy of India in Vietnam said it is in constant touch with local authorities and is closely monitoring the situation.


In a statement, the Embassy said: "A tragic incident involving a boat carrying Indian tourists occurred near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. We are gathering detailed information, and rescue operations by local authorities are continuing."


The Indian Mission has opened control rooms to provide assistance and information related to the incident. Helplines have been set up at the Indian Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City and the Embassy in Hanoi.
