Thiruvananthapuram: Authorities have warned the public about a new cyber fraud in which scammers are misusing the name of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre to extort money from victims.
The fraudulent activity is being carried out through digital platforms such as social media, email and WhatsApp. Victims are sent fake notices claiming to be issued by the cybercrime coordination centre and are threatened with legal action unless they pay money.
According to officials, the fake notices often accuse recipients of offences such as illegal foreign currency transactions or accessing pornographic websites, including those involving minors. The scammers then demand money to avoid arrest or court proceedings.
Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and avoid clicking on suspicious links sent by unknown individuals. People are also advised not to share bank details, OTPs or personal information with anyone online.
If such messages are received, they should be reported immediately through the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or on www.cybercrime.gov.in
Officials added that victims of cyber fraud should report incidents within the first two hours, as early reporting significantly increases the chances of recovering the lost money.
