New Delhi: The government has spent rupees 462.58 crore on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign trips over the last four years (2021–2025). During this period, the Prime Minister visited 43 countries multiple times.

The highest expenditure was on trips to the United States. Of the total amount spent, 16% (₹74.4 crore) was spent on four visits to the U.S. Japan and France rank next in terms of expenditure.

Nearly 9% of the total spending was allocated to visits to Japan and France. The 2025 trip to France was the costliest single visit, amounting to rupees 25.5 crore. The visit was undertaken to participate in the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit and to inaugurate the Indian consulate in Marseille.

An amount of rupees 22.8 crore was spent on the U.S. visit in June 2023, and rupees 19.6 crore was spent on the September 2021 visit. The objectives of these visits included attending the Quad Summit and delivering a speech at the United Nations.

The Prime Minister visited the U.S., UAE, and Japan four times each. He visited France three times, and the UK, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa twice each.

While the Prime Minister maintains that these visits aim to strengthen diplomatic relations, it is ironic that a significant section of the country continues to struggle with food and shelter. There has been criticism that government funds used for such visits should also be prioritized for the welfare and development of the people. The opposition has previously raised questions about the high expenditure on foreign travel.
